I started making collages in the fall of 2017 after I saw a lecture on Collage and the Photographic Imagination. I experienced a deep emotional connection to the images I was seeing, they spoke to my heart in such a deep way, I didn't expect it. The defining characteristics of the collages are the surreal, dream-like state, often non-rational. On the surface, the collages don't mean anything, they are amusing and as I learn more, become more aware of my choices, I am able to make work with a message or meaning beyond the beautiful or absurd. What makes this work unique is that it is a direct connection to my subconscious mind. Previously, I only worked in traditional photography, in the darkroom. Collage is liberating in that I can manipulate the images to be exactly what I want rather than relying on the chance of getting a great shot.
